In addition to the ante and bets, there are other chips in the game that can be used for additional bets or to pay for things like food and drinks. These chips are collectively referred to as the kitty. Unless the players agree otherwise, each player must place in the kitty enough low-denomination chips to make up for any raises that have been made by the player before them.
In pot limit poker, there is an additional rule that a player can only raise their bet if it is equal to or below the size of the current pot. This can be confusing for beginners because it can mean that a player cannot go all-in even with a strong hand.
